TRANSGRANCANARIA 2014

Transgrancanaria is set in the Canary island off the coast of Africa on Gran Canaria. The main race is a 125km traverse (north to south) of the island across the mountains and valleys.  Moving from Agaete on the Atlantic coast which tends to be wet and windy to the sunnier south at Maspalomas. The race is sponsored by The North Face and is the first major International Ultra of the season.

In a very interesting race Ryan Sandes pulled off the win in 14:27:42, second place going to Julien Chorier 14:36:28 and third to Timothy Olsen in 14:39:03. Check out iRunFar.com for the full race details and pre and post race interviews.

The womens race was won by Nuria Picas in 16:44:55, second Francesca Canepa 17:29:18 and third Fernanda Maciel 17:31:57.

These times show just how tough this course is with roughly 8000+ metres of vertical ascent. The race starts at midnight and along the way we experienced low cloud and fog moving into strong sun as we progressed further south and nearer to the finish time of 2pm the following afternoon.

There are several checkpoints along the route. The timings below are for the top 10 men and top 2 women at strategic points along the course, 34km, 57km, 82km and the finish.
